For Kevin, Care Meant Finding His Song Again

Austin musician Kevin Gant was lying on a park bench, unable to move.

He thought he was dying.

“Before I had time to really worry about it,” he said of his medical issue nearly two years ago, “I was taken upstairs in the emergency room.”

The doctors operated on his legs immediately, saving his life. He was discharged soon after, but he found he had another problem: he had nowhere to go.

But now, he needed to get back to living a full life. To do that, he needed ongoing health care, consistent housing, and help sourcing food and transportation.

Through the health coverage provided by the Central Health Medical Access Program (MAP), Kevin found the help he needed.

Through the Transitions of Care team, he received housing assistance, transportation, and food security. These lines of support didn’t just give him the things he lacked—they empowered him to move ahead boldly, to make plans and take the next steps in his life.

Now, Kevin isn’t just out of the hospital.

He’s on his feet and playing his music again.

“For all of these things to come together for somebody like me, who lives as a songwriter, everything always works out,” Kevin said. “I believe everything works out for a reason. I am able to walk now, which I couldn’t do then.”

Access to care had given his life back.
